Cosmo Zooms… into the library.

Today’s storytime activity included experiments dealing with gravity and how the force effects different objects based on weight, size and friction.  Ms. Marsha read the story “Cosmo Zooms” about a skateboarding dog. Then the children built ramps, and simulated a roller coaster.  What a fun day of learning and STEAM activities at the library!

Bubble Day was too much fun!

Abria Hairston was honored by her community on Thursday June 23rd at 4:00pm at the Monessen Public Library. A flowering dogwood tree was planted in her honor earlier in the year by the Children’s library department and a plaque was placed in the same spot today.  Friends, family, community members and library patrons gathered to pay their respects to Abria, who wanted nothing more than to better her community. Matt Shorraw organized the event and raised funds for the memorial stone. She has clearly left a space in the hearts of many, Rest in Peace Abria!

Wacky Wednesdays Continue Through July 13th!

Our  Middle School Madness events continued on Wednesday evening in the library’s board room.  The teens made ice cream in a bag by shaking it for 8 minutes,  they were also given the recipe so that they could make it at home by themselves.  While mixing the ice cream the kids also played the Jelly Belly game Beanboozled where they had to choose a bean at random and it could be a yummy jelly bean or a really gross one! Some of the gross flavors included barf, grass clippings, spoiled milk, and dog food. A good time was had by all!

Daddy Dino Dig Day

Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History visited the children of the library early morning on June 18th. The children learned about fossils, how to excavate them, they also learned about types of dinosaurs and what makes them unique.  The children were very excited to learn and participate with the representative John and were even more excited to get to preserve their own fossils to take home!  Once they were finished with the Carnegie the children then got to dig for their own fossils and “dino” eggs in a sand pit. It was a wonderful morning of learning and fun while celebrating our library dads!

Carnegie Science Center visits the library!

On Wednesday June 15th the Science on the Road crew from The Carnegie Science Center visited the library to talk about the body. The children did experiments about sugars in popular drinks, how the mind plays tricks on us, the mind body connection and the role nutrition plays in maintaining good health.  What a way to start the summer reading program! Don’t forget to keep reading and keep logging those books don’t give into the dreaded that summer slump!

Summer Reading Kickoff

This year’s kickoff was held June 13th at the former Manos Theater lot next to the library.  The children were treated to pizza, a bouncy house, games, a STEM activity, and lots more!  Each child who registered early was given a backpack with summer reading incentives and every child is encouraged to read as many books as possible for additional  incentives and raffled prizes to be given out at the upcoming picnic on July 18th. Check this blog regularly for updates about programs and photos of each event that the children’s department holds throughout the summer reading program! HAPPY READING & HAPPY SUMMER!
