Monday July 25h the library was visited by Mr. Drew DeCarlo the McKeesport area band director and music teacher. He taught the children about musical instruments and tempo, lead the children in a march, and gave the children the chance to play a tuba, a trumpet, and drum sticks. Thank you Mr. Drew for showing us how fun music can be, please come back soon!
Saturday July 18th marked the end of our Summer reading program “Ready, Set, Read” for 2016. A picnic was held outside in the lot next to the library. Hot dogs, chips, snow cones, and ice cream were given to each child and their family that completed the program. After the picnic the children were led upstairs where donated prizes were raffled off. Thank you so much to the parents, children, volunteers, and donators who helped make this year’s summer reading program a success. A very special thanks goes out to Monessen’s Redevelopment Authority for the use of the lot for our picnic. Keep reading and keep visiting us every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at the Monessen Children’s Library!
Throughout the Summer reading program the children were encouraged to learn about healthy eating, movement, and general well being. On July 16th the children participated in a fitness circuit outside on the patio area of the library. Several stations were set up for the children to go through, they were timed and then each were given a reusable water bottle as a prize to further encourage healthy habits. Yay for fun and fitness!
On Wednesday July 13th the children’s department celebrated building with ABC’s. The kids built structures with letter building blocks and listened to a story all about letters. Toddler Time never fails to make us all smile!
Monday July 11th we celebrated Mother Goose Olympics at the children’s library department. The children recited nursery rhymes at different themed stations, each child went home with a gold medal! What a fun day!
On July 9th the Children’s department was invited to participate in a community celebration for Monessen. We read a bubble themed book called “POP” and the children were invited to learn how to make our famous bubble snakes. The weather was beautiful and couldn’t have been nicer for a community picnic!
Miss Marsha started out today’s toddler time with a story about the Gingerbread man. After storytime the children played a giant version of the board game Candyland, and each child was given a prize. A great time was had by all!
On July 2nd the Children’s Library Department celebrated America by hosting the event “Red, White and Move”. Miss Marsha read the book “God Bless America” highlighting the lyrics to the song. Then we held an impromptu parade in the library marching up and down the steps to various patriotic songs. Janae then lead the children in patriotic yoga which included the moves stars, Uncle Sam, eagle, and flag. After stretching out the children and their mom’s and grandma’s played patriotic bingo, and everyone won a prize! Remember no programming on Monday due to the holiday, next program is on Wednesday which is Toddler Time. Happy 4th everyone!
The Toddler Time theme of the day was animal yoga, which gave the children a chance to move and sound just like their favorite animals. They were treated to an animal story and a animal dice game. The children’s department continued the day at the Monessen Community Civic center where they preformed games and outreach programs for the free lunch program. Don’t forget there is no programming on Monday July 4th due to the holiday and this Saturday we will be celebrating the 4th with a special movement program titled Red White and Move! Have a great holiday everyone!
